Fishing news: Lake Gibson middle schooler wins Junior Hawg Hunters bass tourney

Jarred Fields, 14, an eighth-grader at Lake Gibson Middle School, had 10.54 pounds and a big bass weighing 6.45 pounds to win the Middle School division of the Lakeland Junior Hawg Hunters tournament on Oct. 17 at Lake Marion.

Addison Bird took second with 9.52 pounds. Clayton Keene took third with 8.37 pounds. In the High School division, Dalton Dunn had 2.17 pounds to win first place and Jack Thornton was second with 1.55 pounds. 

Steve Coleman and Jason Brewer had 16.26 pounds to win the Polk County Bass Assassin’s tournament Oct. 17 at Lake Pierce. Ryan Cooper and Ronnie Cooper took second place with 15.10 pounds and also had big bass with a 7.70-pounder. Martin Dukes and Dale Lynn took third place with 14.45 pounds.

Leon Harrison and Andrea Crosby had 11.81 pounds to win the Rebel Boy’s Bass Club tournament on Oct. 17 at John’s Lake. Rick Miller and Riley Miller took second with 10.24 pounds and also had big bass with a 5.02-pounder. Ken Singletary and Steven Singletary took third place with 8.75 pounds and were named club Anglers of the Year.

Mason Boylan had 40.85 pounds to win the Toho Marine Elite One Man Tour season ending “Classic” tournament Oct. 17-18 at Lake Okeechobee. Craig Cavanna took second place with 35.95 pounds. George Short took third place with 34.83 pounds. David Howell took big fish with a 7.61-pounder.

Kenny Trimble took second place with 33.41 pounds and also had big bass with a 6.78-pounder during the Lakeland Bassmasters Draw tournament Oct. 17-18 on Lake Kissimmee.

Darrell Cranor had 36.95 pounds to win the Lakeland Bassmasters Draw tournament Oct. 17-18 on Lake Kissimmee. Kenny Trimble took second with 33.41 pounds and also had big bass with a 6.78-pounder. Pat Landaiche took third with 26.46 pounds.

Ryan Brown and Jason Brewer had 14.09 pounds to win the Sunday Open Series tournament Oct. 18 at Lake Hamilton. Terry Pierce, fishing solo, and the teams of Keith Brown and Dennis Minton along with Blake Williams and John Adkinson all split second and third place pots with a weight of 14.05 pounds. Sean Ripley and Josh Witchard had big bass with a 7.13-pounder.

Upcoming Tournaments

The first CATCH’EM CRAPPIE tournament of the new season, held by Hoppy’s Marine, is Oct. 24 at Port Hatchineha. Safe light to noon. Up to four anglers per boat with a $60 fee per boat, plus $5 ramp fee. Heaviest six fish go toward place prizes and big fish. The next Florida Crappie Club tournament is Oct. 24 on Lake Tarpon. Entry fee is $60 per boat for seven-fish aggregate and big fish. The next Lake Wales Po Boys Bass Club tournament is Oct. 25 on Lake Kissimmee out of Grape Hammock. The club is always seeking new members. All tournaments have a five-fish limit with a 12-inch minimum. There is a $35 membership fee per year with a $50 per team tournament entry fee and $20 per team big bass pot. The Xtreme Bass Series Championship is Nov. 6-7 on the Kissimmee Chain out of Camp Mack. The Ron’s Tackle Box Benefit Tournament for VFW Post #4289 will be Nov. 7 on the Winter Haven Chain out of Lake Shipp Park. Safe daylight until 2 p.m. Entry fee is $75 per boat and $5 per angler for big bass. First three places are guaranteed prize money along with a 100% big fish pot. The next Winter Haven Lunker Lovers’ tournament, for members who qualify, will be the classic on Nov. 7-8 on the Kissimmee Chain out of Camp Lester.
