Fishing news: 13 pounds wins Bass Assassins tourney

Steve Coleman and Jason Brewer had 13.75 pounds and a big bass weighing 6.68 pounds to win the Polk County Bass Assassins tournament Sept. 19 at Crooked Lake. Timmy Helms and Ricky Helms took second place with 12.66 pounds. David Lewis and Jay Patterson took third place with 12.56 pounds.

Mark Murphy and Jeremy Scarborough had a three-fish limit of 9.29 pounds to take first place during the Thursday Night Open Series Tournament Sept. 17 at Lake Alfred. Ricky Helms and Thomas Vanzant took second place with one fish at 7.06 pounds that also took big fish. Danny Glisson and Daniel Smith were third with 4.39 pounds. Murphy and Scarborough also had second big bass with a 4.10-pounder.

Rick Miller and Riley Miller had 16.33 pounds and a big bass weighing 5.19 pounds to win the Rebel Boys Bass Club tournament on Sept. 19 at Lake Parker. James Rowland and Alex McClain took second place with 10.78 pounds. Stan Landuit and Gary Bennett took third place with 8.16 pounds.

Kenny Trimble had 13.92 pounds to win first place in the Lakeland Bassmasters Draw tournament Sept. 20 on the South Winter Haven Chain. Jerry Martin was second with 13.01 pounds. Darrell Cranor was third with 11.72 pounds. Gary Hawkins took big bass with a 6.38-pounder.

Upcoming Tournaments

Note: Until further notice, the FWC and area tournament directors advise all anglers and boaters participating in fishing tournaments to adhere to CDC and FWC guidelines for practicing safe social distancing while fishing and while gathering during launch and weigh-in due to the continuing Covid-19 health emergency.

The Thursday Night Open Series will have their season ending tournament Sept. 24 on the Winter Haven North Chain out of Lake Rochelle. Time is from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sign-ups are at the ramp only and will be cut off at 5:20 p.m. Entry fee is $30 per boat, no more than two people per boat. There is now a three fish limit per team. The next MacDill Bass Busters tournament, a make-up for April, will be Sept. 26 on Lake Tarpon out of Anderson Park. Entry fee is $50 per boat of which $5 goes to the big bass pot. Call Greg Bartz at 813-714-9916 for more information.

The next Florida Crappie Club tournament is Sept. 26 on Lake Dias out of the Lake Dias Park Ramp. Entry fee is $60 per boat for seven fish aggregate and big fish. The next Lake Wales Po Boys Bass Club tournament is Sept. 27 on the Winter Haven South Chain out of the Lake Shipp Park Ramp.  The club is always seeking new members. All tournaments have a five-fish limit with a 12-inch minimum. There is a $35 membership fee per year with a $50 per team tournament entry fee and $20 per team big bass pot. Time is safe light to 2:30 p.m. and social distancing is required during the weigh-in. Time is safe light to 3 p.m. This is the final event to qualify for the championship at Lake Kissimmee and a chance to win a 2020 Blazer 595 Pro Elite boat valued at $40,000. Time is safe daylight until 2:00 p.m. Entry fee is $85 per boat pre-registered and $100 day of the event. Ramp fee is $6 paid at ramp.
